I’ve always thought of myself as a writer who takes photographs, but what I’ve learned is that my eye is usually years ahead of my heart and my head. So, I end up taking photographs that take a long time, sometimes years, to understand what it was that drew me to that moment. Once that clicks, the story usually falls into place and the result is either a book that comes together or sometimes it means going back and shooting a film.
I’ve spent most of my adult life living and working in Africa, but I’ve also spent years working in the southern Amazon basin of Brazil and in the Caribbean. My work has taken me far beyond these places - to Russia, India, Australia, the Arctic circle and a ton of other places in between, but it’s to these geogrpahies that I have returned time and again.
That nomadic existence has slowed down considerably in recent years. I’m back home in Texas raising a young family, but I’m still traveling, just not as often and the trips are shorter these days.
For now, my focus is on developing new films, publishing books and continuing to build long-term bodies of work.
